Halloween Party

On October 27, Hsinchu American School celebrated a favorite tradition - Halloween! We began the event with a fun catwalk where all the students got to show off their amazing costumes. We saw a pair of adorable kitties, Vanellope from Wreck-It-Ralph, a hippie, several different anime characters, and Winnie the Pooh! Many teachers dressed up too, showing off their school spirit! Mr. Silverman, Ms. Phenix, Ms. Chen and Mr. Maguire went with a storybook theme - dressing up like Robin Hood, an evil queen, Little Red Riding Hood and a very scary Big Bad Wolf. Mr. Maginn disguised himself in a Totoro costume; Ms. Reep was a beautiful monarch butterfly and Ms. Burden sure scared lots of fifth grade

HAS Hold Fundraiser and Concert for World Vision

HAS partnered with World Vision today to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child. There were speeches from students, faculty members and World Vision representatives. These speeches all dealt with the topic of women's rights and the need for equality on a global level. Afterward, there was a small concert, led by HAS's student bands prior to the head of school handing over HAS's fundraising donation. This was a wonderful fundraising event, helping teach students about the importance of charity and of volunteer work. Everyone had a great time and it was a wonderful learning opportunity as well!

HAS Students Tackle Ocean Pollution

Taiwan, an island country surrounded by ocean, is famous for some of the most beautiful beaches in East Asia. However, increasing piles of trash and sewage contamination have made them unsafe for visitors and wildlife in recent years. On October 21st, 16 HAS students along with our art teacher, Ms. Phenix woke up bright and early to participate in a coastal cleanup in Taoyuan with the National Environmental Protection Agency. Our students learned about the ways that trash and pollution has affected the our environment. The volunteers tracked all the trash they collected along the shorelines and will use the data collected to gather insight into other ways to tackle this enormous and growing

HAS Wolves Howl to the Moon at Homecoming!

On October 20th, HAS welcomed back their returning and new students and teachers at the annual To the Moon and Back Homecoming Dance. Students enjoyed dinner together as a school at the Apollo Hall at the Lakeshore Hotel in Hsinchu. We played two games together, got to know everyone a little more, and danced the night away! A huge shoutout to the Student Council, Student Activities and the Art Council for putting together an amazing night. We look forward to the next student activity, Lock-In, which be held on November 10-11, 2017!

MUN attended its first conference this past weekend: HSINMUN, hosted by IBSH. For some of our junior delegates, this was their very first MUN conference ever. For our other more experienced club members, it was an opportunity to serve as chairs. The weekend was long and rainy, and the committee meetings were sometimes long and stressful, but everyone stayed focused by being active members in the simulation. In the end, successful resolutions were crafted and passed, and value was created by all.

10/27 Charity Concert & Halloween Party

On October 27, 2017, HAS will be hosting its Halloween Party. We will begin a charity concert to raise awareness for the International Day of the Girl Child with performances from our Rock Band and Dance Club, followed by games and activities for all students. Students in high school and middle school are invited to dress up and compete in a costume contest. There will be prizes for the scariest, cutest and funniest costumes as well as a Teacher's Choice Award! This will be a mandatory school event from 2:40PM-3:40PM and parents and guardians are more than welcome to join in on all the fun!

September Middle School Student of the Month

Every month, HAS gives out a student of the month award for the 5th & 6th graders and one award for the 7th and 8th graders. The middle school value of the month for the month of September was teamwork. The winner for 5th & 6th grade was Kiki Chen. For the 7th & 8th grade award, teachers had difficulties choosing a winner. Instead, they nominated the entire 7th grade because they usually worked well together and they tend to support each other and have each others' backs. Congratulations!

10/14 Volunteer with Eden Social Welfare

On October 14th, 2017, ten of our high school students along with Ms. Sonia had the opportunity to join Eden Social Welfare Foundation (伊甸基金會) on a field trip for people with disabilities to Miaoli. The students traveled to the scenic Shangri-La Paradise Park (香格里拉樂園) and Hakka Cultural Park where they assisted special-needs adults on the trip. Our students demonstrated their compassion for others and their tenacity to work in high pressure situations as they interacted with people in the greater community and those who are less fortunate than they are. We are so proud of our students! Hsinchu American School strongly believes in creating well-rounded students and citizens of the world and w

Mock Debate

MUN Leadership took time out of their busy class schedules this past week to host a mock debate for the middle school. The topic, a UN Resolution to destroy the aliens hovering precariously over the Earth, inspired rousing and impassioned speeches from our very articulate students. Students were exposed to UN resolution formatting, and it was also great to see so many students conquer their fears of public speaking and debate - skills that will help in high school, university, and beyond! We hope to see more middle school students at the Model United Nations Club meeting every Friday from 3:10 - 3:50 PM in Room 203!

Parent-Teacher Conference

HAS held it's first parent-teacher conference of the year on October 5th. Parents arrived at the school and were greeted by students from every grade who handed out schedules and helped the parents around the campus. Parents and teachers alike had a pleasant night talking about student progress. We look forward to the next one, which will be March 22nd. See you there!
